ProThrowbacks Supports NY GIANTS CHARITY EVENT Jun 2, 2017
As written by By Dan Duggan | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Second-year Giants safety Landon Collins makes sure that former Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and his teammates are referred to as "the older guys." Just as
Jacobs, who retired after the 2013 season, refers to Collins and his teammates as "the kids." It's just some of the good-natured trash talk that has been exchanged in the lead up to the first annual Landon Collins Celebrity Softball Game on June 2 at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona, N.Y.. Collins will captain a team of his current teammates against Jacobs' squad, which will feature players from the Super Bowl XLII and XLVI champion teams.
Tickets for the game cost $20 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. Giants' Jerry Reese on QB Davis Webb Collins' team will feature quarterback Eli Manning, defensive tackle Damon Harrison, long snapper Zak DeOssie, cornerbacks Janoris Jenkins, Eli Apple, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and others. Jacobs will be joined by running back Ahmad Bradshaw, linebacker Chase Blackburn, cornerback Aaron Ross, cornerback Corey Webster and more. "It's a big thing for everybody to come out to get to meet some players to know that we love them as much as they love us and just to get some interaction," Collins said. "Because when we're on the football field, there's a big barrier up and you can't get near us, we're not really focused on the fans and we're just trying to play football. But definitely trying to make some great causes for this charity event for the Jay Fund and just make it a big thing."
The game was conceived by diehard fan Joe Ruback, who is better known as "License Plate Guy." Ruback raised the idea to Collins at the Pro Bowl in January and the Giants' star safety was immediately on board. Ruback then called Jacobs, who rounded up his former teammates. While Collins and Jacobs take jabs at each other's softball skills, they have a mutual respect for their football accomplishments. "Landon is a great safety," Jacobs said of Collins, who was named a first-team All-Pro last season. "He can play down in the box. He can do whatever you need him to do. Great size, aggressive, he knows his stuff. He goes out there and he's running the defense. He kind of reminds me of (former Giants safety) Gibrill Wilson. I'm not sure how well he can hit a softball, but football, his IQ is high and you can see that by watching the way he plays." Collins is relieved that he doesn't have to tackle the 256-pound Jacobs, who topped 1,000 yards rushing in the 2007-08 seasons and holds the Giants' career record for rushing touchdowns. "He's a different breed," Collins said. "There are no running backs in the game that remind me of Brandon. There's a lot of solid backs, but none that can run like Brandon, can move him like him at the size that he has and put fear in a lot of (defensive backs) and linebackers' eyes."
Jacobs said he's rooting for Collins to lead this Giants team back to the Super Bowl. Collins knows he needs a Super Bowl ring to get on equal footing with the Giants of Jacobs' era. "They definitely set the standard," Collins said. "They got two on us. He rubbed it in my face the other day, talking about how that's one thing I don't have: Two rings. Even though I've got a (national) championship ring, it's not a Super Bowl and that's what we're definitely working on." The team of former players have been installed as the early favorites -- with a disclaimer. "I have the old guys crushing the new guys," Ruback said. "Unless they can't swing a bat with two rings on their hand." For ticket information visit www.landoncollinsgame.com.
